Best Audiobooks for Kids
August 20, 2014
We love listening to audiobooks in my family. My daughter and I play at least one audiobook on the drive to preschool every morning. Every weekend, we visit the audiobook section of the library to find another book and CD to take home for the week’s listening.
Even if your library doesn’t have an audiobook section, you can find some great audiobooks for your collection absolutely free. Born Reading: Bringing Up Bookworms in a Digital Age contains scores of audiobook recommendations, but I collected a few more free links for parents.
In the list below, these links lead to free MP3s or OverDrive library downloads of audiobooks that we have listened to over and over and over these last few years.
Best Audiobooks for Kids
1. The Munschworks Collection by Robert Munsch: At this link, you can download a FREE audiobook recording of all the books by this great Canadian kid’s author. Many of the stories are recorded live, complete with kids giggling along with the story.
2. Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel: “Frog and Toad, those famous pals, are beloved by generations of children. Their every adventure is filled with the magic of true friendship, whether they’re telling ghost stories, searching for a lost button, or eating too many cookies. This captivating audio collection features all four of the Frog and Toad books, read with humor and charm by award-winning author Arnold Lobel.”
3. Fancy Nancy by Jane O’Connor: These lovely books show the adventures of a cute little girl as she learns life lessons and practices “fancy” words. This will build some awesome vocabulary while your child reads.
4. Amelia Bedelia Audio Collection by Peggy Parish: These classic books depend on verbal blunders and bad puns, they can entrance certain kids. These audiobooks feature a great voice actor and vivid sound effects.
5. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak: My personal favorite audiobook, a raucous rendition of the timeless story–complete with a jazz soundtrack and growling narrator.
